He (or it?) comes equipped with WiFi computer connection, video camera, microphone and loudspeaker. Made by Meccano, he's a far cry from the nuts and bolts of old, and you can (via computer) control him from anywhere in the world. Leave him as a sentinel at home, and he'll not only take snapshots of his surroundings and send them to you but he'll also sound an alarm if he detects movement, take a picture of the intruder and (this is our favourite part) send it to you via email. Security aside, he's also a lot of fun - he can play MP3s and is compatible with Skype's latest VoIP software, so you can use him as a webcam and phone, when he's not too busy busting burglars. When his battery gets low from sneaking around all day, he simply seeks out his charging station to juice himself up again, ready to scare the life out of the next poor soul who attempts to sneak around your humble abode.
As with so many Meccano kits you can build him in a variety of ways to give you different looks (well, him different looks, obviously, you're not reconstructing yourself - unless you are, in which case you probably don't need another robot). As your personal spy robot he can trundle about the house, listen to conversations, watch movements and speak to people on your behalf - sort of like your own CCTV only considerably more interesting and fun, if ever so slightly Orwellian. The future seems to have well and truly arrived. Slightly spooky, and truly amazing.
