Probably the most pre-historic looking creature still roaming the planet (though in sadly decreasing numbers), the Rhinoceros has a very undeserving reputation for being a dangerous animal. It's a herbivore for goodness sake, kind of a cow on steroids. It's just that Rhinos have really rubbish eyesight, and if you live in the African bush among loads of dangerous animals that you can't see, then you'd be nervous as hell too. We guess that it's quite useful if you're par blind to have a reputation for charging very fast at anything that moves. The thought of being hit by a panicked pick-up truck with a massive horn on its bonce has to keep quite a few predators away, though sadly not the worst predator of all, which is of course us.

These two White Rhinos* are made by Hansa who are known and respected the world over for their close-to-nature reproductions of the world's best loved animals. They spend a considerable amount of time researching the animals before they begin to make their reproductions, and it certainly pays off. The large one is 61cm long, and the small one 44cm, and they're made with great attention to detail, yet manage to retain real character - so you can't help yourself wanting to pick one up and give it a good cuddle. Judging by the fact that we had to use a crowbar to prise these two away from IWOOT staff's desks, it seems people get very, very attached to them.

*The name White Rhino doesn't mean that it's white. That would just make sense, which simply wouldn't do at all. The theory is they are called White Rhinos because Boer settlers used the word weit to describe them, which means wide. These Rhinos have very wide mouths, as opposed to Black Rhinos (which are the same colour as White Rhinos, go figure) which have small mouths.
